EN 13823 standard designation

EN 13823 standard overview

This standard specifies a method for determining the fire response of building products (excluding floor coverings and products specified in EC Decision 2000/147/EC) in a single burning test (SBI).
This standard was developed to determine the fire response properties of flat-panel building products. For certain products, such as linear products (casings, pipes, cables, etc.), special regulations are required.

EN 13823 Test Principle
The specimen, consisting of two vertical wings at right angles, was exposed to a flame produced by a main burner at a right angle base, produced by the combustion of propane gas which passed through a sand box burner and produced a heat output of (30.7 ± 2.0) kW .
The combustion performance of the sample was evaluated through the entire test process of 20 min. Performance parameters include: heat release, smoke production, lateral flame spread and combustion drippings and particulate matter.
Before igniting the main burner, the heat output and smoke production of the burner itself should be measured for a short time using an auxiliary burner far away from the sample.
Some parameter measurements can be performed automatically, others by visual inspection. The exhaust duct is equipped with sensors that measure temperature, light attenuation, mole fractions of O2 and CO2, and the air flow causing pressure differences in the duct. These values are automatically recorded and used to calculate volumetric flow rate, heat release rate ( HRR ) and smoke production rate ( SPR ).
The lateral spread of flames and burning droplets and particles can be measured visually.

EN 13823 sample requirements
The angle specimen has two wings, namely long wing and short wing. The maximum thickness of the specimen is 200 mm.
The dimensions of plate products are as follows:
a) Short wing: (495±5) mm × (1500±5) mm,
b) Long wing: (1000±5) mm × (1500±5) mm

EN 13823 test requirements
In the European standard EN 13501-1, the combustion classification of building materials and structures is A2, B, C and D. The requirements for EN 13823 are as follows:
Level A2 : FIGRA≤120W/S and LFS<sample edge and THR600s≤7.5MJ
Grade B : FIGRA≤120W/S and LFS<sample edge and THR600s≤7.5MJ
Level C : FIGRA≤250W/S and LFS<sample edge and THR600s≤15MJ
Class D : FIGRA≤750W/S

EN 13823 similar standards
GB/T 20284 Single combustion test of building materials or products

Note: The grade determination test requirements for EN 13823 in EN 13501-1 are basically consistent with the grade determination test requirements for GB/T 20284 in Chinese standard GB 8624
