British Standard: BS476-7 – Flame retardant testing of building materials, fire testing

British Standard: BS476-7 – Flame retardant testing of building materials, fire testing

The following content will explain the flame retardant and fire test standard BS 476-7 for building materials:

BS476-7 Fire retardant testing of building materials – Standard name:

  • BS476-7: Fire Tests on Building materials and structures – Method of test to determine the classification of the surface spread of flame of products

  • BS476-7: Flame retardant and fire protection test of building materials and building components – Determination of product flame surface burning level

BS476-7 Fire retardant testing of building materials – Overview of the standard:
BS476-7 is used to determine the lateral extension of a sample surface and determine the combustion rating based on speed and extension length. BS 476-7 is mainly used to determine the flame spread on exposed surfaces of walls and ceilings.

BS476-7 Flame retardant and fire protection test of building materials - Scope of application of the standard:

  • surface of wall material

  • Exposed surface of insulation material

  • Exposed surface of ceiling material

BS 476-7 Fire retardant testing of building materials – Standard analysis:

This method is used to measure the propagation of flame along the surface of a vertical plate specimen, and the measured results are suitable for comparing the fire performance of exposed surfaces of walls or ceilings. The test device is shown in the figure. This method also ignites the sample in the combustion box, and the ignition source is a gas radiant panel and a medium-sized gas blowtorch.

According to the test results, the tested materials are divided into 4 levels according to the table. Class 4 materials have a high fire risk and are not allowed to be used as building materials.
